Museum

Odisha Crafts Museum Kalabhoomi was established on 22nd March 2018 under the Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts Department, Govt. of Odisha. It showcases the Handicraft & Handloom Craft traditions heritage of Odisha state. The heritage museum spreads around 12.68 acres of land, with awesome ambience. In addition, it comprises of 9 galleries. Apart from these facilities, such as the AV room, children play zone area, open air amphitheatre, workshop zone for Handicrafts and Handlooms also exists. 

The Museum is working with a vision to promote the existing Crafts as well as to revive the languishing crafts. It also seeks to position Odisha’s rich heritage in the global eye. The Skillful Craftsmanship of artisans take forward the vision of art and craft to certain level where Odisha has occupied a unique place, which attracts tourists across the country and abroad. 

This is the only organisation in the state that provides ample opportunity to intellectuals, students, research scholars to conduct research in this sector. It is popularly conceptualized as a “Living Museum” in as much as, the artefacts of all the crafts displayed in various galleries of the museum are still in practice by artisan and weaving communities inhabited across the state.

Spanning across 12.68 acres at Pokhariput, Kalabhoomi was developed as the one stop for Odisha Handicrafts and Handlooms. Featuring 10 galleries 9 of which are open, the campus also has an impressive set of other amenities. The galleries cover Terracotta, Traditional Paintings, Stone and Wood carving, Metal crafts, Natural Crafts, Tribal Crafts, Pre-weaving techniques and Cocoons and lastly Handlooms. Other than that, there is an Outdoor Amphitheatre, special workshop area, children’s play area, an outdoor canteen and a souvenir shop. A unique feature of the museum is the outdoor display sections in the form of courtyards. Courtyards dedicated to Tribal living and Temple architecture are part of the museum complex while the entry courtyard which leads up to the museum has a special large container display section as well as a Kuldevi temple.

The Mission

Our mission is to give people the chance to engage with the Handicrafts and Handlooms of Odisha in a bid to increase awareness and appreciation. Along with a focus on making the everyday museum experience dynamic and interesting we also hope to bridge the gap between craftsmen and consumers.
